What a long, strange trip it’s been. Mostly, it’s been a trip.
Here’s a more melodic Kid606 – older, wiser, more in touch with the inner self. As such, you’ve got warm intricate melodies over snappy hip-hop beats on “Dark Archipelago” and “Love Me” that wouldn’t be out of touch coming from Ratatat. “I Want Her Wings” and the title track, meanwhile, spin cloud rap into a more mel- ancholy, introspective vibe. Here’s where that decayed cousin of acid shows up, in stray bent synth squelches that fall through a reverb bedding.
We do get our moment of truly surreal beauty, however, with “When Things Come Together”, somewhere be- tween rave comedown and the sci-fi nostalgia of the Blade Runner soundtrack. “Temporary Revelations” and especially closer “Hood Gone Mad” further this theme, with the EP ending by coming in from the cold in an electronic dystopia. It’s gritty out there, but you can always come home and turn on the synths.
